What A Long Strange Trip It’s Been

I am lucky enough to have been traveling and DJing Drum and Bass music for about 19 years now. When we all were getting into this the everyday technology for documenting things were not as readily accessible as they are now. Sure, we had the normal means of doing mix tapes,  DATS, Mini discs etc. but it was still a challenge to capture it all. Most of the sets and recordings are lost to history and memories of those who were there. (Insert standard ‘you just had to be there mannn’ comment). In the last few weeks I have come across more and more of them. My good friend Andy The Pooh has found a grip of archives of my old show Eclipse from right around the Y2K era. Now that I will be home a bit more, I plan to get more of these up online. Here is one that I was able to get up already.  Its from February of 2001:

Another recent discovery was of older recordings and videos from RESPECT in Los Angeles. I played there at the end of February 2002. You can listen AND watch to that club event here:

Now flash forward 13 years almost to the day of the RESPECT set to last week for my latest installment of my current netcast of The Vast Parlor Radio:

so yeah, 19 years later, and here we are. Still loving and living for this music. Still getting that same joy and happiness this drum and bass music brings us all. The passion is more intense then ever, as is the relief of knowing that the music is always there. That there is one thing in this crazy universe that just makes sense to me. A big up to all those who have supported, pushed, prodded, and encouraged me all these years. Here is to another 19 years…

A few days before I headed over to London last week, I found out that the Horizons Music was having their 10 Year party as well as the release party for their TEN LP and that it was going to take place at Plan B in Brixton. In all my travels to London, I had yet to make it to a Drum and Bass event and it had been on my bucket list to do, so I had to make this happen!

Once I got settled into the rental flat (about three hours later than planned…) I put a post on facebook to see if any of my London friends were heading out, and about a half hour later noticed I had a message from an old friend who had got in touch with Neil at Horizon and got me on the guest list for the night, which was a total surprise (Thanks D!) So after a not so restful overnight flight in from Philly, a late check in to our rental flat, no sleep, and being up for a day and a half, It was time to head to the tube and head south to Brixton.

I got to the club quick and easy and actually ran into Neil from Horizons at the front door. We had a quick talk about the new album, the scene in Philly, and that the label gets a lot of support in Philly with my show as well as the lads over at IMPERIAL (www.imperialphilly.com) bringing in members of the stable and we were off to a great start! After a few moments chat, I had to head inside to catch the music, as I didn’t want to miss any of it!

I made my way in and grabbed a nice cold draft cider and posted up near the back and took it all in. The SOUND at Plan B is exactly what you would want to have at a drum and bass club / event. Loud, clear, amazing bass, and all EQ’ed and balanced perfectly. Perfectly at club level but not obnoxiously loud. Amoss was up first and laying down some vibey rollers. I was familiar with Amoss’s production but had never heard him DJ, and I really enjoyed it. Great programming, track selection, and great sense of build up as the club filled. He worked the room up proper for sure.

At about 12:30 Digital and Spirit took over. I have been a fan of both of these men for as long as I have been enjoying drum and bass. I have heard many of their DJ sets and archives over the years, but NOTHING will compare to hearing them live on that sound system. We are talking straight Dub and Bass vibes with more broken beats and Amens then one could ask for. It was really a treat to be there for that.

So after that hour and a half of pure rinse out, the sounds of Jubei and Loxy doing a b2b set was up next. You pretty much guess how that went. Plenty of Metalheads and Cyclon sounds filled the club. Two masters of the craft at work with tons of new tunes, remixes and a few classics in there for good measure. Before they were finished, sheer exhaustion had started to settle in. I am really bummed I was not able to hold out for the closing ninety minute set by Break, which was one of the main reasons I went. However he was playing 3:30 to 5:00am and I just didn’t have it in the tank, and I did have to work on Sunday (the main reason I was in London…) so I had to get some sleep. Over all it was an amazing time and so glad I got a chance to make it out….next time I am not going alone though as London clubs are not for older guys alone to be hanging out in. I will see you in February London!
